Siren Visual Entertainment distribute the wilder side of film on DVD, and are a champion of the Australian underground film industry. The expanding company wanted to strengthen their position in the mainstream market, and redesigning their logo, website and printed material was a major part of their strategy.

Siren’s previous logo was literal — using ancient Greek motifs such as warships, ‘classic-looking’ serif type and the siren itself. In line with the company’s more focused direction, the logo needed to be more immediate and eye-catching.

The director of the company was very specific — the siren of Greek mythology was originally an evil creature to be feared, so pretty ladies beckoning demurely on rocks was to be avoided. That left us with a sizeable challenge — satisfying the client’s desire for historical accuracy in their logo that doesn’t alienate the company’s market. Small Studio illustrated a rather unhappy-looking siren’s face, with blazing white eyes, black hair spreading into tendrils at the shoulders, and a halo of flames. Detail was simplified, colours were saturated and solidified. The logotype was capitalised  and the serif font was replaced with a heavy sans serif typeface.

As Siren’s different genres had varied audiences and different product groups needed to work together on store shelves, we recommended that unique logo styles be created for each genre. This was achieved by changing the background flames of the generic logo to other shapes and colours: A blue cog for documentaries, a red blood splatter for horror and so on.

From this, Small Studio designed print templates for Siren’s DVD packaging, a website with an online store and advertising for press and the internet.

"We wanted our new logo to look great, and that was pretty much the extent of our original brief. Small Studio worked with us and in a very professional, methodical way, extracting the essence of what we were looking for and eventually presenting us with what is now our logo. When we saw it, it was met with an resounding, unanimous “YES.”

It turns out the process of taking abstract ideas and presenting them consistently and timelessly is incredibly difficult, and really all I can say is we’re lucky we employed Small Studio for the job. I have and will continue to recommend anyone to them, every time."
