The Black Arm Band

Small Studio was given an open brief in terms of the look of the site, so we made use of the many archival images available to us, overlaying the historic photos with the words used as part of the protest movements of the 1960s and today. The colours we chose were earthy, though we avoided being too literal with the red, yellow and black of the Aboriginal flag. Typography was restrained, as it was the intention to present the Black Arm Band as being a culturally significant entity. After all, not just anyone performs at the Opera House!

"The Black Arm Band was looking for a site that reflected the integrity of the artists involved, the contemporary nature of their performances
and the sharp political message of the show... whilst also being distinct from the more commonly used looks and colour schemes of similar sites.
Small Studio responded to our brief with energy, creativity and a commitment to doing the best job possible with our very short timelines and with a very modest budget. They seemed genuinely engaged in the work of the Black Arm Band and the design is sophisticated and contemporary whilst still referencing the important historical and political elements of the project. They always seemed to have a neat and cost effective solution to functionality requirements and were very accommodating to
changes along the way.
I know that the artists involved in the Black Arm Band are thrilled to have this site represent them nationally and internationally and I wouldn't hesitate in using Small Studio for future projects."
